I have a 2017 Paul Reed Smith Paul's Guitar here with its original hard shell case and factory paperwork. It weighs 7 lb 8 oz.
Conditionally the guitar looks very nice.
The body top shows just very faint traces of guitar pick strumming below the two pickups. None that scratches the finish. More so, on a satin finish, light guitar pick strumming appears as very faint rubbing marks. So there is very little of that. Any other similar superficial signs of use will be absolutely minimal anywhere else on the body top. There is no accumulation or buildup of any soft playwear. I did not find any singular marks either.
The body sides/edges show a few small traces of that same superficial guitar-pick-rubbing type of wear on the lower body edge surrounding both strap buttons. There is a little bit of faint glossing to the satin finish. This happens from the normal motion of a leather guitar strap rubbing against that area. It is not scratching. It simply makes the satin finish appear a little shinier. I did not find any indentations, bumps, chips, or dings. Nor did I find any buildup of pattern playwear along the body edges.
The body back shows no buckle rash or worming. Nor did I find any chips or dings. Any superficial signs of rubbing on the satin finish will be minimal. I did not find any clusters of light scratches or surface swirling. The bulk of the surface of this guitar looks very clean throughout.
The neck shaft contour shows no dings, bumps, or scratches. A little glossing is more common on these neck shaft contours and is pretty much normal and inevitable since your hand is constantly making contact there. I have cleaned the neck with Music Nomad guitar polish, so it has a nice even sheen up and down the neck shaft contour. The headstock looks great. I found no dings or bumps there.
The frets are tall and full showing no pitting or divots. There is no fret wear. There are light signs of patina and aging to the frets, but no dark oxidation spots. If desired, they could be polished to a brighter finish. The setup plays fantastic, which is often the case with Paul Reed Smith guitars. This is a typical dialed-in factory setup and plays like butter. The original electronics are working like they should, and the hard shell case is in excellent condition.
So this one rates a 9.1/10 and grades as excellent. Not on the highest side of excellent, but overall a very nice-looking guitar. I found minimal to light surface signs of rubbing on the satin finish, but no dings, bumps, or penetrating finish scratches. Nor did I find any buildup of soft surface playwear. As far as satin finishes go, this is on the better side of what I typically see on guitars with this finish. The pictures do it justice. It is structurally and sonically sound and plays and sounds fantastic.
Unique to Paul's guitar are the pickups. There is much in the way of info on these online. I will give you my players perspective on them. P90's, mini humbuckers, and similar unique pickups when described in a positive light will be said to sound like a "tighter" humbucker that has more of the note distinction and clarity of a single coil, while having the warmer more dynamic sound of a humbucker. I concur with this. In the case of Paul's guitar pickups i would say that they are less of a departure from a conventional humbucker then a p90 or mini humbucker though.
Paul tailored the dynamic range and soundstage of a pickup till he found a sweet spot. To my ears these sound like an articulate humbucker that is just a little faster and tighter with no "lag" to it's tone. Note that it has absolutely no sterility or lack of harmonic content that you might worry a non conventional humbucker might have. It's an extremely rich pickup in harmonic content. The mini switches are essentially a coil cut to give you a single coil mode when activated, making them further versatile
Tonally the guitar itself sounds outstanding. It's a balanced tone in terms of it's EQ of treble, bass and mids, where it is unique is in the subtle detail and complexity of the tone. That is what sets Any truly great guitar apart. And in my opinion that is achieved through the tonewoods, not the electronics. The truly best woods, those that custom shop guitars are made of have a lively sing song quality to their tone. That is definitely present here.
Note that this listing may come down at any time as I am a multi-platform seller and do sell locally and on my own Site as well in an effort to keep sales fluid. State sales tax will be charged on Reverb sales when applicable, so factor that into your purchase.
I will immaculately pack it as well. I use quality shipping boxes, ample tape on all sides. And sufficient bubble wrap filler and bracing inside the box. And always marked/denoted as fragile. I generally detune guitars 1/2 half step prior to shipment as well if needed.
Thank you for reading and considering!
