The Boss HM-2 Heavy Metal is one of the most iconic high-gain distortion pedals ever produced and has become a cult classic among collectors and heavy music players. This Made In Japan black label version dates from the original production era and is especially sought after for its vintage construction and unmistakable character.
Originally introduced in 1983, the HM-2 was designed to deliver aggressive amp-like distortion with powerful active EQ controls. Its unique combination of thick low end, abrasive upper mids, and saturated gain created the legendary “chainsaw” guitar tone that became closely associated with the Swedish death metal scene. At the same time, the pedal is capable of a wide range of heavy rock and classic metal sounds when dialed in more moderately.
The four-knob layout features Level, Distortion, Low, and High controls, allowing extensive shaping of the pedal’s aggressive voice. The active EQ section is a major part of the HM-2 sound and gives the pedal its instantly recognizable texture and massive presence in a mix.
This Japanese-made black label example represents one of the earlier and most collectible versions of the HM-2 series, appreciated for both its sound and historical importance within the world of vintage Boss pedals.
