This bass and I saw a lot of the world together but now it's time to pass the torch.

Up for sale is my (almost) all original 1982 G&L SB-2 Bass. The not original parts are the case, which still has my old website spraypainted on it, the 1/4" jack (I recently replaced it) and it has a drop D tuner on the low E. Everything else is original and in full working order.

This bass was my main bass guitar when I worked as a touring/recording bassist in the late 1990s through about 2015. It has sat since then until I just puller her out and gave her a thorough fret job and setup (I build instruments for a living, you can see some of my work here). Everything works perfectly but it definitely has some patina!

A couple of the original frets have the typical indents in the typical places, see pics, but I decided against replacing them as, when leveled and crowned, the bass is set up with incredibly low action and no buzzes, so why fix it if it ain't broken? They're only original once...

If you're not familiar with G&L, the L is for Leo Fender who, after selling Fender Guitars and co-founding MusicMan, set out to create the ultimate instruments based on all he'd learned in the past with his longtime friend and associate, George Fullerton. This is one of the earliest production models, before they really finalized their designs, so there are some other basses from the same era with the same name that are a little different. Cool, eh?

If you start searching G&L you'll see the word "Tribute" added to a lot of the available instruments. They are paying tribute to this, the original!

An interesting design they tried out back then was a two-piece wood maple neck with the truss rod sandwiched between and the fret board carved from the same block (not glued on). It's a pretty cool ida but I think they adopted a more traditional method later.

When I bought this in the 1990s, it was because to protect my vintage Fender P from the rigors of flying and van life. Then it was just a bass, not a piece of history. But this is still a way you can play with that vintage look and cred for less than a Fender of similar ilk - and closer to the master's hands and vision!

She was already pretty well worn when I got it, but as you can see I put some miles on her, too. I always liked playing older instruments because I felt like I channeled some of the music from its past in to my playing. I hope now for someone to be able to channel some of my career into theirs.

Ships in this old Fender J case that it fits well in. Feel free to spraypaint your name over mine :)

There is a serial number on the neck in the pocket, but no signature (rumor has it some were signed by Leo).
