Legendary unobtainium Scully Lathe. This is the real deal vintage unit from late 1930s or early 1940s. These are virtually impossible to find. There were about 600 made but it is believed that the great majority of them are now gone. Only somewhere around 40 of these units are known to still exist today.
I've been dealing in high-end studio stuff for many years. This is the only one of these I've ever had and probably will ever have. Once it's gone, it's gone, don't miss out.
The condition of this particular example is excellent. Quite literally a piece of art. There are some reflections that can be seen in the picture that appear as flaws but they are not.
Has the original table which is often missing when these do come up for sale. Also has the both sides, and the front back panels, which are sometimes missing as well.
The motor tub is original.
I was told that the lead screws are for 33.
The unit has the serial number 355 stamped on the underside of the platter as well as the back of the front panel.
This is a pre-war unit which also makes it historically more interesting at least I think as virtually all of the pre-war units are believed to have been melted down for the war effort. according to a couple of experts there's only three or four pre-war units known to exist, well I guess this is how a fifth one.It does not have the vacuum system, this is an early unit that predates the adaptation of the vacuum system. Although something could easily be fabricated to work.
Ideally it should have a Westrex cutting heads, stereo or mono. I have a couple leads on this as well as the RA1700 cutting amplifiers.I believe the unit to be all original as far as I can tell. Remember, each of these units was built by hand by a team of engineers. Because perfection was of the utmost importance to them back then, each team probably only made 10 or 15 units a year. There can be slight differences from one unit to another. As well as slight differences depending on the year it was manufactured.
This unit along with another one of the same came out of a recording studio number of years ago in Washington State. It was fully operational then. I was told that the units didn't have much use while they were there. I do not know their history before then.
As it sits now it's going to need a few things obviously to work. It might take a little bit to get it going but so would any other lathe that you purchase anywhere else. Some people are so devoted to making these perfect that they've spent many years trying to achieve perfection with these units.
There is a box included with the sale that has some spare parts.
