Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome.

You are looking at a classic and somewhat rare 1960's era Shure Brothers SM33 model ribbon microphone with a period Shure S33B desk stand, period cable and red mic sleeve. This is a very cool combo / package and great for studio use, broadcasting and singing.

This was often referred to as "The Johnny Carson mic" as he used this particular model for many years on his show. The SM33 was much like the Shure 330 model. The only difference between the two was that the SM33 came in a painted scheme to cut down on any unwanted stage light that would cause glare to the audience or cameras of the day.

The SM33 had a slightly different impedance and pick up pattern. It's adjustable from 50 to 150 OHMS and there is a selection switch for music or audience situations. The SM33 is much harder to come across then the 330 model these days and this one is quite gorgeous.

It should be noted right away that this microphone is aloriginal and works 100%. The signal is quite smooth and will work for just about any situation.

The SM33 was originally sold in the 1950's as a "333" model but was changed to SM33 for some strange reason or other? There is no difference between the two mics other than the label stating where they were sold.

The SM33 was just one of four ribbon models being sold in the 1960's from Shure Brothers. This was the uni-directional design as where the 315 model was strictly bi-directional. The 330 and SM33 had harder, more masculine lines than the 315 model and slightly more Italian deco in design. An absolutely beautiful piece of artwork really. This was a state of the art and quality mic for it's era. Many of these examples still work very well even today.

The Shure SM33 was made from about 1960 to the 1970's. A good 15 to 20 year run and it's really too bad they stopped making it as it was without a doubt one of their finest mics ever.

The SM33 has a built in bottom lower shock. This 330 and SM33 both came with the beefy lower shock mount that was designed to absorb impacts that would otherwise give the mic unwanted feedback while live. The shock mount works like new with zero lean. This mic takes a standard female XLR cable which is included and it's a period Cannon piece. It's appx 10 inches in length. Soft pliable and has the Cannon male XLR end connector. Both connectors look fantastic and the cable works perfectly. Simply attach any longer XLR cable and you are in business.

The SM33 was a special mic in that it was one of the very few early American mics to incorporate the XLR attachment as in 1950's the XLR cable was almost unheard of. Shure was way ahead of the game with the SM33 microphone.

As seen in the pics provided this mic shows a minimum of cosmetic wear. It's a beautiful example and was well taken care of. The satin chrome glows nicely and you'll be very hard pressed to find another example as nice. Mic is solid...no loose parts inside or out.

The joint mechanism holds strong and the black Shure label looks very good. Overall this mic is a very conservative 8 + on a scale of 1 - 10 physically speaking. An original Shure mic sleeve is also included and in excellent condition. A great place to store the mic when not in actual use. just slip it over as seen in pic # 3 and leave it. The period Shure S33B desk stand shows just as little wear. It's included in this sale...

A somewhat rare 1950's era Shure Brothers S33B microphone desk stand in all original condition. This stand is quite unique and was designed only for a handful of high end Shure microphones during the 1940's to 1970's.

It makes an extremely stable platform for the Shure SM33. Interestingly enough about the S33B model stand is that they were only made in Chicago and are all pre 1956. Shure made a fairly large run of them but only for a couple years then sold them off slowly over the following 30 years but any S33B you see was made in the early 1950's and you just rarely see them around.

The S33B is an all aluminum or magnesium design and quite heavy being extremely thick and built like a tank. You simply could not break the frame. This S33B has excellent metallic silver paint with no scuffs or scratches on the body. The stand has 6 original pads and they look very nice. Stands dimensions are appx 5 inches wide X 3 inches tall X 5 1/2 inches deep. Weighs a solid 2 pounds. With the mic on top it's appx 10 inches tall.

This stand is perfect for the mic because of it's wide, stable base. It's a nice piece sure to draw attention anywhere it's displayed.

As with all my vintage microphones...
