This drum machine is a joy to use. All functions have been used and check out perfectly. Like its little sibling the DX and the E-mu Drumulator, SP-12, and SP1200, the DMX is wonderful for its immediacy - just hit play and record and start making beats. You only need the manual to reference the numeric functions for MIDI, etc. It sounds amazing, as you would expect. Samples sound kind of close when you hear them on YouTube or coming out of a phone speaker, but the punch of this beast is real.Sounds: Kick (3 velocities), Snare (3 velocities), Open/Accent/Closed Hat, LM1 Toms, LM1 Congas, LM-1 Clap (2 velocities), Crash cymbal, Tambourine (2 velocities), Rimshot, Shaker (2 velocities), DMX Clap. A rear panel switch toggles between the LM-1 toms and LM-1 Congas. Also note that the two LM-1 claps are in the slots labeled "ride" on the front panel. This kit sounds great together. You can of course source your own EPROMs and customize this DMX however you want easily and quickly - the front panel flips up after removing two thumbscrews, and as you see below, the EPROMs are mounted in Ziff sockets for ease of switching.I will include the Stardust DMX cover I got for it - it's starting to show some wear as these covers unfortunately do over time, but it's a great dust cover. I will also include an IEC power cable.I purchased from the previous owner in 2018, who had the following service done:Magnetic Memory (MRAM) UpgradeReplaces the original battery backup system with modern MRAM memory. All patterns, MIDI, and system settings are stored to MRAM — the internal battery has been removed entirely, eliminating any risk of battery leak damage to the CPU. Can be further modified to double user memory.Electrongate MIDI InterfaceA modern, Oberheim-compliant MIDI interface developed by a former Oberheim technician. Features include: MIDI out for sequencing external gear, assignable notes per trigger button, multiple clock division options, programmable trigger output or quantized intervals, and rock-solid external MIDI clocking. Replaces and improves upon the original Oberheim MIDI retrofit.Full RecapEvery capacitor replaced — power supply, CPU section, and every voice card, including all caps in the audio path. New voltage regulators on the power supply. New trimmers added for pitch tuning, with a lower range than stock.Ziff SocketsInstalled on all voice cards for tool-free, easier/safer EPROM swapping.Black-Stained End CheeksThese were hand-stained and show a little wear as shown in the photos. The MIDI sockets are installed in the right end cheek. ButtonsAll buttons reconditioned or replaced using a combination of new old stock Oberheim parts and careful reconditioning. Every button fires instantly. In addition, I recently cleaned the Toms and Cymbal sets of buttons (nine in all).
