YouTube guitar dynamo Rob Scallon is known for his daring feats of fretboard heroics. Browse around his channel and you'll find videos of Rob playing metal on sitar and banjos, creating manual delay with three guitarists, and exploring the furthest frontiers of just about every stringed instrument you can name.
When Rob recently asked us to nominate something whacky from Reverb he could give this patented Scallon treatment, we wanted to find something he had never seen before. And the Guitendo—that is, a guitar made out of an original Nintendo system by the Echo Canyon Guitar Company—fit the bill nicely.
The six-string electric guitar has a fixed bridge and a single humbucking pickup. While Scallon is playing the right-handed model, you can also order one left-handed at no additional cost. This instrument uses the original Nintendo NES system as its body, but Echo Canyon can also make electric guitars, baritones, and bass guitars out of Super NES, Famicom, Playstation, and Sega consoles.
Watch the videos here to see Rob play the original Super Mario Bros. soundtrack on the Guitendo and to see the Nintendo itself in action. Yes, this particular instrument is also a fully functional game console, though please note that the regular Guitendo does not come equipped with a playable system. If you too want to shred while your buddy plays Mario beside you, be sure to click the link below to enter our giveaway for the chance to win the Guitendo featured in Rob's videos.
