When selecting the top wood, it’s clear that expertise and experience are directly incorporated into Martin’s guitar-making process. A finely resonant Sitka spruce top delivers a bright and powerful sound experience, particularly in the mid and high frequencies, with numerous overtones that linger for a long time. Due to its strong vibrational response, the top, in combination with the Forward Shifted Scalloped X-Bracing (in contrast to the D-28 with its non-scalloped bracing), builds up an incomparable dynamic range even at lower volumes, impressively showcasing both classic strumming and picking.

The Indian rosewood back and sides further contribute to three-dimensional tonal depth with clear, well-defined bass tones. This allows the guitar to produce its characteristic voluminous, orchestral tone, which nevertheless conveys a warm character.
