We are one of the only facilities in the Pacific NorthWest that buys, sells and restores reel to reel tape decks. We have over 35 years experience working on these units, and have the tools and test equipment to properly align and bring these decks to life.
We use MRL calibration tapes, and are dealers for ATR tape. We work on everything from mono tube machines to 2" 24 track studio decks. We are reeltoreeltech dot com!
We stock many types of ATR tape from 7" reels to 2", in several formulations. We have about 350 decks in stock at all times. If you haven't yet checked out our website, please do so. Under the 'about us' tab we have a bunch of articles regarding the 'great barn finds' that we've come across this year, netting us well over 100 decks and tons of parts.
This is the Sony TC-758 auto reverse reel to reel tape deck from around 1975-1978. Tons were sold, as it was an affordable auto reverse tape deck back in the day, and it made excellent recordings. The Ferrite heads meant a longer life than more typical steel heads, and the frequency response is excellent. The unique swiveling head means bi-directional recording and playback, which also made as a good sales feature.
The TC-758 is a standard consumer stereo 1/4 track deck, and has 3 3/4 and 7 1/2 IPS speeds. It has RCA inputs and outputs, to connect with any standard consumer stereo.
These Sonys need a ton of work done to them, but having repaired dozens over the years, we have the proper tools and stock the more common parts for these decks to bring them back to life. We did the following work to this deck:
-replaced both pinch rollers with new ones
-replaced both the counter and main capstan belts, as well as the one for the rotating heads
-replaced the brake linings, known to fail in all Sony decks
-unseized the pinch roller mechanism
-replaced the 3 microswitches around the rotating head assembly that cause intermittent problems.
-disassembled the swivel head assembly to remove old grease, and re-lubricated the mechanism
-cleaned all switches and controls
-set the bias and eq for ATR MDS-36 tape.
-test ran the deck for 12 hours to ensure longevity.
The deck is flat to 20Khz as shown, in both directions, and to about 15Khz at 3 3/4, very good for this Sony model.
Cosmetically, the deck is a bit of a scratch and dent special, and we've reflected this in the price. The front panel itself is in very nice shape, however the head cover is oxidized as shown, and one of the unique Sony screws is missing. (the one screw holds it in place just fine). The wood sleeve case has a significant scratch on the left side as shown, and is chipped in a couple of places.
We've therefore reduced the normal selling price of this deck by $150. The head covers do come up online from time to time, or it could be sprayed flat black to improve the overall look.
Included with the deck are two Revox clone NAB adapters, and a metal takeup reel is included as well.
We know how to pack these decks, and overpack them with styro sheets and bubble wrap. The shipping price quoted is worst case to the East Coast. Shipping in the West will be less, and any excess will be refunded.
