Interesting and rare ‘Surround Processor’ made by TEAC in Japan. Hailing from the lost era of 'Video Disk' home theatre hifi gear of the 1980s. This is able to take any stereo signal (not just video discs) and process it for a variety of surround sound outputs. Would work great in an installation.

It is fully tested, functional and sounding great. All of the lights in the cool looking front display still work.

You can also use it in an unintended way as an effects unit. Messing with the delay time while audio plays back produces a cool warbly effect. Mix the dry and surround outputs together for a spatial reverb type effect.

Comes with the original manual.

From the manual:

"Packed with functions for surround sound enjoyment.

- Built-in power amplifier (monaural, 12 watts + 12 watts) for direct driving Surround Sound rear speakers.

- Delay control to vary the delay time ( 5 - 20 ms )

- Line output terminals for external amplifier connection for upgraded rear speaker performance.

- Available surround sound modes include: Dolby Surround, Synthetic Surround, Hall Surround and Matrix Surround, switchable at the touch of a button for different types of sources.

Synthetic Surround

This mode adds a quasi-stereo effect to a monaural soundtrack. Front speakers produce quasi-stereo signals and the rear speakers, delayed signals.

Note: Synthetic Surround can also be applied to stereo sources, but is not recommended because the tone changes.

Hall Surround

This mode is especially suitable for music sources because a surround effect similar to that available at a concert hall is obtained. Front speakers reproduce normal stereo signals and the rear speakers, delayed signals with reverberation.

Matrix Surround

This mode allows for a surround effect with non-encoded stereo sources such as ordinary stereo LPs, videodiscs, etc. Front speakers reproduce normal stereo signals and the rear speakers, delayed signals to expand the sound field.

The AV-400 incorporates a Dolby Surround decoder circuit two reproduce the recorded information to be true to the original and creates a real "being-there" sound like that in a theatre. This is substantially different from the surround effect produced by processing the signals electronically through just the addition of reverberation."
