Up for sale is very clean, great playing example of Harmony's top-of-the-line acoustic guitar: A 1968 Harmony Sovereign H-1260 This particular guitar is labeled Silvertone (Model 319-1220), made in Chicago and sold through Sears, Roebuck and Co. It's the same model as the H-1260 other than its sunburst finish and headstock logo. This guitar is made of all solid woods (no laminates). Jimmy Page used this model to record "Stairway To Heaven" and "Ramble On". Keith Richards and Pete Townsend also played Sovereigns in the mid 1960's.
These models are sometimes called the "poor man's Martin" because their tone, volume, and rhythm punch are comparable to the much more expensive Martins. The distinctive body shape is not just another Martin dreadnought clone -- it's actually larger and deeper than a dread which contributes to its tone and volume. The big lower bout really makes the low notes especially rich, and it sounds fantastic in lower tunings like dropped-D, open-D or DADGAD.
This guitar features a bookmatched spruce top, single-piece mahogany back, mahogany sides and neck, and Brazilian rosewood for the bridge and fingerboard. It has an adjustable truss rod. pinless bridge and bound fingerboard. The sunburst finish is rather rare on this model, most of which were made with "natural" finish tops. The sunburst is an especially pretty one, shaded very nicely around the contour of the body, not the typical one-size-fits-all "teardrop" stencil type. The original faux tortoise pickguard is still intact and looks great. The neck is straight and the frets show only light wear. Includes worn chipboard case from same era.
This old beauty has a few surface marks and scratches, but is in excellent overall condition. There are no cracks, breaks or repairs. These Sovereigns are known for their huge bass response and great overall tone and this guitar really delivers. This one is light and resonant with power, punch and clarity. Action is medium with room on the saddle to go lower. Currently strung with medium bronze strings, this guitar sounds as good as any Harmony jumbo that I've owned. You can get one for less, but you may have to put $400-500 worth of work into it to make it playable. This one is ready to to gig, record or inspire you to write your next big hit.
