Up for sale is an all original 1987 Ernie Ball Music Man Sabre 3EQ in excellent, never gigged out condition and in perfect working order. Weight is 8lbs. 13ounces. Assembled in the years immediately following Ernie Ball's acquisition of the Music Man company (and using pre-Ernie Ball parts), this bass features an exceedingly rare custom color Translucent Sting Teal finish body, topped off with an original clear pickguard. Featuring the classic ash and rosewood tone wood combination and outfitted with dual pickups. I installed a new 9 volt Duracell battery, and she was good to go. Sound wise this bass has a bell-like upper midrange, and warm pleasing low end that translates well through the pickups. With the preamp-dual pickup combination you can dial up plenty of treble zing, or as much warm rich low end. Dial back the bass for a tight well defined, up front in your face presence.
This bass plays comfortably well with low action and round wound strings
The maple neck features a medium C shaped profile with a satin finish and ideal comfortable depth. The profile feels both substantial and fast, as well as feeling consistent in depth as you move up the fretboard and fretting easily in all positions. The thick slab figured rosewood fretboard features the original jumbo frets which have plenty of height and life and currently showing only faint wear on the crowns. The nut measures 1 11/16" in width and the clear finished headstock includes the original "Music Man” stamped tuning machines.
On the body, all the electronics work as they should, with original pots and knobs. The neck has never been off the guitar. Nor will I take it off to further ID. Please refer to the photo of the Ernie Ball / Music Man serial number dating page for this bass’s birthday. The chrome on the bridge and control plate are in non-tarnished/non oxidized condition along with clean and working original string mutes. The original clear pickguard is clean and wear free as well. Strap buttons are original.
The finish is strong in color and consistent in person. The clear coat is in great shape. There is no finish checking on the entire neck/body, just some small superficial scratches along the lower bout to the input jack plate. The overall condition of this bass is excellent, especially considering the rarity of the color and era of this bass’s production. The neck profile, frets and fretboard are particularly clean as well. You can polish her up if you feel she needs to be. “Please see Photos” Some watchers have asked about blemishes. The blemishes are reflections in the photos. The pickguard has superficial scratches easily polished with fine plastic scratch remover.
Never gigged out the rectangular OEM hard shell case w/key is in great shape in and out as well.
