About This Listing

1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom 20th Anniversary, Sunburst Released in 1974 and Gibson's first Anniversary model, the 20th Anniversary Les Paul Custom celebrates 20 years from the first appearance of the range topping Les Paul Custom in the Gibson catalog. As is befitting of a range-topping Anniversary model the guitar has high-end appointments throughout and a commemorative 20th Anniversary Inlay at the 15th fret. Construction is consistent with Les Paul Custom models from the early 70’s with a three piece Mahogany/Maple “sandwich” body, two piece Maple top, three piece Mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard and two Gibson Humbucker pickups as standard. Appointments include a diamond inlayed, multi bound headstock with Gold Kluson ‘Waffleback’ tuners, bound neck with multi-ply double-bound body, gold ABR-1 bridge and tailpiece, black pickup surrounds and pickguard and Gold pickup covers. This one came in to the shop with a small crack from under the nut on the bass side of the neck (see pics.) A quick trip to our trusted Luthier and the guitar was solid/stable, good to go and built to last! The 20th Anniversary Custom proved to be very successful and would go on to be used by players as diverse as Randy Rhodes, Steve Jones and Lindsey Buckingham. Offered in and often seen in Black and White, Wine Red and Cherry Sunburst guitars were also produced. Our guitar is a great players example in a very attractive, faded Cherry Sunburst finish. The Sunburst has started to mellow giving the guitar less of a stark two tone appearance. Weighing in at 10.5 lbs it has a solid feel but doesn’t feel overly heavy, balances well whether on a strap or seated. The guitar retains it’s original gold Kluson Waffleback tuners, ABR-1 bridge and tailpiece. The guitar plays well with a great feeling neck and the original “fretless wonder” frets still having plenty of life left. Two fantastic sounding original stamped Pat No. T-tops and four CTS pots help date the guitar to late 1974, two high-end Siemens Klangfilm Capacitors complete the electronics. The control knobs have been changed for a set of gold speed knobs. Comes with a non-original hard shell case.
