About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1993 G&L ASAT Classic in exceptional, 100% original condition and perfect working order. As the third instrument company founded by Leo Fender, G&L's instruments benefit from Fender's decades of experience at Music Man and (of course) Fender. Produced at the same Fullerton, CA factory as the early Music Man guitars, this ASAT is the culmination of years of electric guitar innovation and design. ASAT is a military abbreviation for "anti-satellite," and the name was suggested by author Richard Smith after he read an article about the Air Force's ASAT missile. Both Leo Fender and G&L co-founder Dale Hyatt reportedly liked the image of a guitar shooting down things in space, and hence the name "stuck."

The direct descendant of the Telecaster, the ASAT Classic boasts the familiar trappings associated with that instrument, but with an updated feature set. Weighing 8lbs 3oz, this guitar has a smooth treble response, spanky midrange, and punchy low end that translates well through the pickups. Sporting the Leo Fender-designed MFD "Magnetic Field Design" ceramic magnet pickups, this ASAT delivers a wider frequency response when plugged into an amplifier compared to a traditional Tele-style pickup, with a grunt in the lower midrange that can only be described as "tough" sounding, in a very good way. The classic tonewood combination of an ash body, maple neck, and gloss-finished maple fretboard results in an instrument that has a big, round acoustic voice with the distinctive complex midrange push of a solid ash body, evocative of a '50s Fender. Professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, this guitar plays very well with low action and solid intonation.

The maple neck has a slender, fast-feeling C profile carve with just a hair more substance as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .795" deep at the 1st fret and .880" at the 12th. The original 22 medium jumbo Jescar nickel-silver frets have an incredible amount of meat and height, showing only light wear beneath the plain strings on frets 1-5. The truss rod is responsive, the neck is straight, and the guitar plays cleanly in every register. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width. On the headstock, the G&L ASAT logo is flawless and the original tuning machines turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The neck heel and pocket retain the original 1993 date stamps.

The ash body has incredible grain, highlighted by the lightly ambered gloss finish and accented by the original three-ply parchment pickguard. Electronically, everything functions as it should, with the MFD pickup pair wired to a three-way pickup selector with its unique ivoroid tip and Master Volume and Tone controls with knurled knobs. The pots are the original "Made in Japan" variety used by G&L in this brief era of production (the guitar is a USA-made example).

Cosmetic wear is limited to pick scuffing on the treble side of the parchment pickguard and a speckling of surface patina across the bridge plate and saddles. The Natural high gloss body finish is exceedingly clean with only some faint finish scratches in the clear coat of the gloss, while the satin-finished neck profile is flawless.

The original tweed hardshell case is included.
