Essentially a new spin on an old favorite, the Bronco uses the same body/neck platform as the Mustang/Duo Sonic/Musicmaster with a new vibrato unit design, new pickguard shape, and bridge position-mounted single coil. The pickup has plenty of sparkle and bite, with more roundness than one might expect and a smooth, balanced character. The guitar weighs a mere 6lbs 14oz. We've had this Bronco dialed in here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 11-50 strings and low action.
The maple neck has a slender and fast-feeling C shape, with significant palm wear through the nitro lacquer gloss. The dark, tight-grained Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the original fretwire, and both the lacquer neck finish and Brazilian board are two features only seen on the very first Broncos from 1967-68. The original slender frets are intact, showing moderate, uniform wear on frets 1-5, and lighter wear until roughly fret 10. The guitar plays well up the 24" scale, and the neck is very straight with a responsive truss rod. The nut measures 1 5/8" in width, and the headstock retains the original Fender "F" tuners with white hexagonal buttons.
The original electronics are untouched, with the black bobbin pickup wired to original pots that date back to the 42nd week of 1966. The stock white pickguard is missing a couple corners but still sits nice and flat and secures well to the body, and the pair of aluminum skirted witch hat knobs are also intact. The stock vibrato unit has clean chrome plating and all of the minor parts that complete this rare vibrato are present, including the original arm. It's a surprisingly effective vibrato, with a smooth, even response and reliable return to pitch, and it's a curiosity why Fender never used this system on any subsequent models.
Under the pickguard and in the neck pocket, the original Fiesta Red finish is present, yet a previous owner did an amateur overspray on the body in a slightly darker, more purple-y shade of red. This overspray on the body shows plenty of scuffs, nicks, and minor battle scars, along with a couple curious amorphous shapes on the back where the finish reacted to stickers which were cleanly removed. There is also some scuffing in the pick path, and heavy lacquer checking on the original finish on the headstock face.
This Bronco is from the very first months of production, featuring untouched electronics and all original hardware.
