Nick Reinhart, lead singer and guitarist of Tera Melos, adores weird sounds. In fact, he loves them so much he released a solo album titled Scary Sounds in 2013. As an authority on strange tones, we asked Nick to come in and show us how he gets some of the weirdest ones for our newest Pedal Tricks video.
To get some tones that sound most unlike a guitar, Nick employs a few pedals from EarthQuaker Devices, a favorite pedal maker of ours and one that actually made their own Pedal Tricks video themselves. The Bit Commander, which provides a bass synth sound, the Tentacle, EarthQuaker’s analog octave up, the Organizer, an octave generator, and the Rainbow Machine, which defies description but is in essence a modulation delay, make up Nick’s arsenal for this round of Pedal Tricks.

First, Nick shows us the tones he’s dialed in on each pedal individually before using them in tandem. His first combination includes the Bit Commander feeding into the Rainbow Machine, which he uses both with and without its Magic Button, finally leading to the Tentacle for some really grimy bass synth sounds and the occasional engine-like swoops. Nick’s next trick drops the Rainbow Machine into the Organizer to create a spacey, watery warble, and then hits the Tentacle for short, mechanical bursts with a stuttering delay.
