Linkin Park’s Brad Delson Rocks a Cardboard Strat

Signal Snowboards has partnered with Ernest Packaging to create a cardboard Stratocaster, built with Paul Waller, a Fender Guitars master builder.

The cardboard Stratocaster is made from a slab of corrugate, layered for lasting strength, and has to withstand 250 lbs of torque placed on the neck of the guitar from the strings. The guitar was created for an episode of “Cardboard Chaos,” which is distributed on YouTube. The goal of the show is to demonstrate new and different applications for paper and cardboard.

“The Strat has incredible history and is iconic, so this has to feel good, look incredible and most importantly, sound f***ing fantastic!” Signal said in a press release. “We are shredders, we are builders and we love music. As guitar players this project is only credible if the guitar works.”

The idea was hatched when Dave Lee and Marc Wierenga from Signal Snowboards approached Ernest with the idea and the goal of demonstrating the guitar at the upcoming National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) show and for Linkin Park.

“Once you get the form everything falls into place,” said Mike Martinez, Ernest’s director of design solutions. “Working with the guys at Fender was awesome. Their commitment to their craftsmanship was very cool to see.”
