About This Listing

NOTE: The adaptor seen in the last two pictures in NOT included. These pictures are only shown as a reference (for the appearance, the specifications, etc). I do NOT have this adaptor. The specs on the adaptor state positive tip (center) and negative sleeve (ring), But I really believe that it is the opposite. NOTE: the info on the pedal's bottom label states "Use.... negative ground power supply" so that might be why the pedal can still work fine with a negative tip power supply. A lot more details about the power requirements of this pedal are in the description.

Up for grabs is a used (kind of vintage - 1980s) DOD 555-A Distortion (ANALOG) Performer Series.

  • This line (the Performer Series) was designed to be ‘studio quality’ – running at 18 Volts for higher headroom and studio fidelity.  Built like a tank, made in America.

The pedal has less than light average wear. Look's good for its age. The casing is very rugged.

I put it's condition as VERY GOOD (which I feel is accurate).  But some people might feel that it is in between Very Good and Excellent shape.

==

It has the battery cover and the battery cover is on the back of the pedal fine (the tab is NOT broken) 😉

  • These pedal are notorious for having missing or broken battery covers.

---

Markings / Info / Values on the pots (potentiometers) See picture # 9:

  • GAIN pot is E.C.I. ALPHA C500K
  • TONE pot is E.C.I. ALPHA W100K
  • OUTPUT pot is E.C.I. ALPHA W100K

  • NOTE: The adaptor seen in the last two pictures in NOT included. These pictures are only shown as a reference (for the appearance, the specifications, etc). I do NOT have this adaptor.

I'm also including an extra piece of foam for you to cut and use in the battery compartment area.

Also:

*** I am including one new set of D'Addario EXL-110 light (gauge 10) electric guitar strings. Please let me know if you prefer D'Addario EXL-120 super light (gauge 9) strings instead of the gauge 10 strings ***

The selling price will be $4 less if you do not need the batteries and $3 less if you do not need the strings.

  • Please make an offer with a message stating that you do not need any of these items.
  • You can also message me if you prefer that these details be edited in listing.

Sorry NO box, NO paperwork, and NO adaptor.

  • NOTE: this pedal uses a "special" adaptor with a 1/4" plug and is 18v (or 20v). The last two pictures are only provided as a reference. The adaptor in NOT included.

----

The pedal 555-A Distortion pedal for sale in this listing was tested and itworks fine.

The inside was cleaned up - the old foam that was crumbling / disintegrated has been replaced with new foam.

The pots are NOT scratchy.

Since the Under-Side of the BOTTOM Plate HAD some noticeable discoloration - I decided to sanded it / clean it. Even though it was then clean. I took it a step further and and sprayed it with one coat of light gray spray paint. So it looks nice.

The circuit board has TWO chips (listed below):

  • HEF4007UBP HSS8331 1 W

----

I put it's condition as VERY GOOD (which I feel is accurate).  But some people might feel that it is in between Very Good and Excellent shape.

In case you are wonder - there is NO internal trim pot on this model pedal.

Even though this pedal is several years old and it was used - overall it is in great shape (NOT 100% perfect).

Top Side of casing:  see pictures # 1, #2, # 3

The Black Hard Plastic Piece that you step on (to turn the effect on / off):  It has scuffs, light discoloration, nicks, impression, and scratches. It is intact on the pedal fine and there are NO breaks. The screws have some not too serious rush and the black finish has light fading.

The top center silver plate - has light wear and a few imperfectionsns: scratches & nicks SEE pictures # 1, # 2, # 3

The center reddish orange plate where the controls are and that that says Distortion 555-A: It's very clean with a few very minor surface imperfections. See pictures # 4 and # 1, # 2, # 3

The pedal has all of the KNOBS.  In general - they are fine with a few not too serious imperfections on the top edges. The top areas have a few very light surface cloudy lines & spots and very light surface scratches. See pictures # 4 and # 1, # 2, # 4

Left Side of casing:  see pictures # 11, #12, # 13

Right Side of casing:  see pictures # 14, # 15, # 16

Front Side of casing:  see picture # 10

Back Side of casing: see picture # 5

Battery Cover: It has very minor surface cloudiness, a few light scuffs, and the edges have a few/ very small / tiny nicks. SEE picture # 5

  • NOTE: Just a heads up :
  • The battery cover is kind of tricky to put on and to take off. After some practice you kind of know how to do it. But it is still a pain.
  • You might wan to take off the bottom plate when dealing with the battery cover. Otherwise - being forceful with it when putting it on / taking it off - puts you at risk of breaking the tab part.

The RUBBER on the BOTTOM:  It's very clean. see pictures # 6, # 17

The BOTTOM LABEL: It's very clean with a (NOT 100% perfect). With the exception of surface cloudiness& a few short cloudy lines, some extremely light hair-line surface scratches and a couple of tiny & very small nicks. The black print is fine. see pictures # 6, # 17

OUTER areas of the BOTTOM PLATE: The areas near the screws (the corners) and the upper & lower edges are most clean with minor oxidation. And the areas around the bottom label are clean with minor oxidation.

As mentioned near the beginning of the description - the Under-Side of the BOTTOM Plate HAD some noticeable discoloration - I decided to sanded it / clean it. Even though it was then clean. I took it a step further and and sprayed it with one coat of light gray spray paint. So it looks nice.

The INSIDE IS CLEAN (casing / circuit board): Very clean. The foam pieces are fresh / new. The foam in the battery compartment should be kept in there. The bigger foam piece that I placed over the circuit board is optional for you to have in the pedal. You can remove the foam pieces to cut them to your liking. But they are there for insulation purposes (to prevent metal to metal contact) and to protect the inside components. The under-side of the pots  each have a few tiny rust spots, and some of the white graphics has fade off (cause by the old foam rubbing these areas. As mentioned above- the old foam was removed and new foam has been added).

BATTERY CLIPS (original ones that are on the pedal): The oval shape areas with the +/- battery connections have a weird design. At the moment they are fine - but they do have a tendency of coming apart. I will include two unused battery clips in case you need them for a future repair (you can see them in the first picture). If you do not know how to do this - you can see people doing it on YouTube. Personally (from experience I would just cut the existing wire in half and make the connection on the wires -- not at the jacks, etc (just less hassle to do it this way). You would need Soldering Iron, Solder, and Electric Heat Shrink Tubing (these items are NOT included). Or have your guitar tech or friend do it for you. I can do it for you upon request (NO additional cost).

---

The controls are:  GAIN, TONE, and OUTPUT

The pots (potentiometers ) are NOT scratchy.

In case you want to know (but you can also see this info in picture # 9):

  • GAIN pot is E.C.I. ALPHA C500K
  • TONE pot is E.C.I. ALPHA W100K
  • OUTPUT pot is E.C.I. ALPHA W100K

The jacks are:  Out, IN, and power [the power jack is on the back side and it is for a 1/4" (6.35mm) plug].

What is strange is that the original model power supply states that the tip is positive and the sleeve is negative. But in reality it is the opposite. I used to have some DOD power supplies that were "compatible" with the Performer Series pedals because they had the 1/4" plug and they always made the pedal buzz (did not work properly with the pedals). The pedals always worked fine with the two batteries. So I always thought that the adaptors were defective. And when I recently did my "experiment" with what I explain below - when I reversed the polarity with a Truetone 1 Spot CYR Reverse Polarity Converter (along with the other items I point out below) the pedals buzzed. Therefore I feel that the power requirement is actually negative center.

I do NOT have this item - but while doing research I came across this item (on EBAY) which you can connect by following some of the info that I describe below:

  • 6.35mm 1/4” TS (MONO) Male to 3.5mm 1/8" Female Mono (TS) Audio Adapter Converter Cable (it is similar to what I have in # 1 -- but both ends are MONO and is is a very short cable instead of just the short plug end.

NOTE: Here's an idea for what you can do for the power supply:

If you have a Dunlop ECB-004 18v adapter (which is 18v negative center) - get the following (by the way I have a lightly used Dunlop ECB-004 adapter available for sale upon request - message me):

1) Hosa GPM-179 (model #) Mini Stereo to Mono 1/4 inch Headphone Adapter (model name)

  • which is 3.5mm TRS (stereo) Female to 1/4" TS (MONO)Male Adapter (I have this item available for sale)
  • Does not matter that it is stereo because it will only use the mono ring.

or Livewire Essential Stereo 3.5mm Female TRS to Mono 1/4" Male TS Adapter Black (I have this item available for sale). Does not matter that is is stereo because it wil only use the mono ring.

2) Truetone 1 SPOT 3.5MM converter (model C35) (I have this item available for sale)

I did test out this pedal doing what I just described.

*** If you do not have an 18V power supply - I highly recommend that you get a Truetone 1 Spot Pro CS7 (multi outlet power outlet - mostly used on pedalboards - but useful is you have a variety of pedals with different power requirements / and different power jack sizes. It has one jack specifically for 18v pedals (barrel end 2.1mm). But you also need # 1 and # 2. NOTE: # 2 is part of the CS7 when you get it new. However - it might / or might not be included if purchased pre-owned. Hope this helps 😁

Yeah - all of what I just explained is kind of tedious - but it does the job. DOD was very foolish to have designed power adaptor / power jack, etc for the pedal the way that they did. Oh Well. And it pissed off EVERYBODY (including myself) that has gotten a used DOD Performer series pedal without the adapter. @#%! YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME, REALLY MAN!!.....

Please message me for info pictures, and prices of these items and please message me to make arrangements for purchasing any of the items that I just mentioned. NOTE: the shipping / packaging cost will probably increase for International locations due to the extra weight. The s/p cost will stay the same for USA locations (because I can use a flat rate package).

---

I took pictures of all sides of the pedal. There are some pictures of the inside of the pedal. And the first picture shows what it comes with.  Please message me (or make an offer) if you only want to buy the pedal or if you would like to buy the pedal with certain items presented in this listing.

NOTE:   There may be some imperfections that I overlooked.   There are some imperfections that can be seen in person that do not appear in the pictures.  Also  - there are some imperfections (glares, reflections. dust specks) that show up in the pictures that are not that visible in person.

  • Comes from a smoke free and pet free environment.
  • Feel free to ask questions.
  • I will discount shipping on combined purchases!!
  • USA shipping is usually with USPS - but I might use UPS (both methods have tracking)
  • International Shipping is with USPS First Class Mail International.
