- The Sennheiser VSM201 Vocoder is the rarest synthesizer effect ever made. The impossibly limited production, which many estimate to be a mere 12 units, compounded by the fact that many important artists have made use of this model Vocoder, has rendered the original VSM201 one of the most obscure pieces of important musical equipment ever produced.

Developed by Dr. Fritz Sennheiser, the VSM201 is an incredibly complex and highly engineered 20-band analog Vocoder, comprised of a ridiculously intricate series of circuit boards. The result was an unbelievably incredible synthesizer effect with a retail price of $20,000 in 1977. Considered a complete failure as a business venture, Sennheiser halted production well before their intended goal of 50 total units.

Since then, the Sennheiser VSM201 has been famously used by Kraftwerk, Herbie Hancock, Neil Young, Daft Punk, Giorgio Moroder, Aphex Twin, etc., with this exact unit (serial number 21) being used by Daft Punk on their Grammy award winning track, Get Lucky.

This Vocoder was also used by many other well-known artists as it was previously owned by Audio Rents, and was the only VSM201 available for rent in Los Angeles for many decades.

The current cosmetic condition clearly reflects this history.

Additionally, this side of this unit was modified for ease-of-use and complete practicality when in a studio environment.

Surely, the cabinet could easily be restored to original spec. should someone desire, though it's important to note that this may be the most historically significant VSM201 of the very few produced, as it's THE one we've all likely heard.
