Otari MX-5050 8SD 8 Track Tape

For purchase is my trusted Otari MX-5050 8 track 1/2“ Tape Recorder.
In late October 2021 it has been completely checked, where needed overhauled and nicely cleaned by Holger Siedler from THS MEDIA. So this is the chance to get a deck that’s just working and ready to record. 
The heads have plenty of life so they also will last years on. 

Currently the machine is calibrated to SM 468 which gives plenty of the desired tape sound when capturing drums, bass or guitars etc.
I add the fitting MRL calibration tape witch makes it super easy to switch between different tape formulas and also to check the current calibration after the shipping.

I‘ll also add two fairly new SM468 plus six other and older Tape formulas to experiment with and of course the manual which explains everything about the recorder in great detail.
The right oil for the capstan motor, to make it an all round carefree package. 

The MX-5050 sounds awesome and is super usable for recording or warming up digital tracks. 
In fact I recorded the last 3 years exclusively trough this machine (15ips) and then dumped the tracks via Burl Convertors into pro tools. Artists tell me all the time, that they really like how their voice sounds after hearing it recorded through this chain.

In general It can get from clean, just a bit thicker and rounder, warm, like you hear it in the room sound, to exciting, gritty if you push it beyond +1 or +2. The later one is especially useful for projects which suits a real vintage vibe. 

I think it's overall the best machine in terms of sound and quality for its price, also if you consider the cost of a big Studer, let alone the cost of new tape, calibration tapes and maintaining. I think at some jobs it even beats the sound of some way more expansive decks.
