Kremona Zornitsa – Big Acoustic With A Difference

Here is something that will stand out from the crowd ideal for strumming, picking and does a good job of the ‘Gypsy Jazz’ Django sound.

Made in Bulgaria when it was part of the Soviet block, I can’t say for sure what timbers were used, probably a spruce top and laminated rosewood back and sides, but it is solidly built and I was told was from the 1970s. It has plastic edge binding front and back, a small piece of which on the back near the neck heel joint has been replaced at some time but is hardly a problem.

It measures 40cm across the lower bout, has a floating bridge and the original tailpiece. Curiously these came with the tuners with plastic rollers typical of nylon strings even though it was made for steel strings, but it all works well.

It has a straight neck and the frets though part worn are clean and polished flat. The nut is wide at 52mm which makes it comfortable for chording or fingerpicking too.

The extra soundhole is a distinctive feature of these, I can’t say from a player’s perspective if that makes for better projection, never having played it for an audience but one would think so.

If you want something different that stands out from the herd these do not often turn up in Australia.
