About This Listing

BSS Opal FCS-966 Constant Q 2-Channel Graphic Equalizer from dbx provides a generous +/-15 dB of control range on each of 30 constant Q frequency bands. For optimum performance, each filter band is arranged to be out of circuit if its sliders are left in the center of its travel, and thus does not contribute unnecessary noise or distortion.

In addition, a sweepable high-pass filter, variable gain, and HF/LF contour controls are provided for extra flexibility. Indication of level is provided by an 8-segment meter that reads input level when the unit is bypassed, and output level when active. This allows accurate level matching of the equalized to un-equalized signal. Indication of overload is provided by a separate clip indicator that simultaneously monitors the level at 3 critical internal points to ensure that any overload does not go unnoticed.

When bypassed, the FCS-966 Equalizer connects the output directly to the input with a high-quality relay, ensuring that a signal passes even with a loss of AC power. The relay drive also incorporates a power on delay and AC power loss detector, ensuring that there is no possibility of on/off thumps being generated by the unit.

For installation flexibility, XLR, jacks, and pluggable terminal block (Combi-con) connectors are provided as standard, with transformer isolation on both the inputs and outputs available as an option. The mains lead is a standard detachable IEC type.

The Opal FCS-966 Equalizer features separate LF and HF contour filters, which can change the overall sound balance without disturbing a detailed room or loudspeaker response. These filters are very musical gentle boost and cut shelving filters, which can be used to add (or remove) room effects that change with temperature, audience numbers, or humidity. All these effects can be easily made without disturbing the critical fader settings already made.

Constant Q Filters The FCS-966 uses the Constant Q topology which means that the filter width is constant irrespective of the fader gain setting. Constant Q filters provide a smooth and predictable interaction between adjacent faders and the resulting EQ curve more closely resembles the actual fader positions More Gain Control Per Filter Each EQ fader has +/-15 dB of adjustable gain. The faders are long-throw 45mm types for precision control High-Pass Filter Also provided on the FCS-966 Equalizer is a sweepable high-pass filter which can be used very effectively to restrict the low-energy output for better amplifier and loudspeaker performance. Stage monitors also benefit from the application of a high-pass filter to remove bass signals e.g. from vocal-only wedges Metering Its 8-segment LED meter shows output level and warns of signal clipping within the equalizer. When the unit is switched to bypass, the meter will read the input level, allowing accurate matching of the dry and equalized signals using the gain control Center Bypass When any equalizer fader is in its center detent position, the filter is automatically bypassed, for optimum performance Input / Outputs All the inputs and outputs of the FCS-966 Equalizer are electronically balanced, with optional transformer balancing. To make installation easy, 3 different interface connectors have been included: XLR-type, 1/4" TRS jack and Phoenix / Combi-con screw terminals Relay Bypass The EQ IN buttons switch the EQ path into circuit. When switched out, or power fails, a high-quality relay switches the input signal directly to the output connectors Control Descriptions Faders 30 EQ filter faders on ISO centers, each with nominal +/-15 dB of gain. Positive center-detent on 45mm long-throw precision faders HP Filter Sweepable high-pass filter, frequency adjustable from OUT (flat) up to 250 Hz LF Contour Smooth shelving filter, +/-6 dB of gain at 50 Hz HF Contour Smooth shelving filter, +/-6 dB of gain at 14 kHz Gain Used for overall unity gain adjustment.
