About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1962 Gibson J-45 in excellent condition, crack-free with a bold and unfaded Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer finish. A visually stunning and early example of Gibson's J-45 ADJ, this guitar boasts an upgraded carved rosewood bridge and traditional drop-in saddle, a notable sonic improvement on the maligned plastic bridges often seen on this model.

One of the bigger and bolder-sounding ‘60s J-45s we’ve had the pleasure of offering for sale, this J-45 is extremely lively and powerful sounding with exquisite projection. The bass register has significant muscle and kick with a treble range that’s woody and punchy with enough sparkle to retain clarity for fingerpicking. The solid mahogany back and sides provide a certain fullness and wooly tonal character, while the solid spruce top gives the instrument top end definition for exceptional string to string balance, and a certain bell-like, sweet upper midrange that cuts through a mix and records very well. The guitar weighs 4lbs 2oz,  professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with fresh 12-53 phosphor bronze strings, offering comfortable action and effortless playability.

The one-piece mahogany neck has a notably slender C-shaped profile carve with modest shoulder and a very fast, easy-playing feel, measuring .810" deep at the 1st fret and .875" at the 9th. The Brazilian rosewood fretboard retains the original medium jumbo frets which have plenty of meat and their full factory height, showing only light wear on the crowns of frets 1-3, extending more faintly beneath the B and High E to fret 6. The guitar plays cleanly in every register with a responsive, ideally adjusted truss rod. The original nylon nut measures a full 1 11/16" in width. On the headstock, the guitar features original Kluson Deluxe single line strip tuners with white buttons and light patina across the nickel plating. These tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch as they should, and different tuners were installed at one time, with light halos of larger washers on the headstock face.

All of the original braces are intact and stable, and the upgraded rosewood bridge has the correct footprint and belly-up shape, sitting perfectly flush with the top and fitted with a drop-in saddle that has good height. The original very dark large tortoise pickguard also sits notably flat, considerably thinner than later "syrupy" Gibson guards, allowing the top to have a more dynamic, responsive sound. There are faint markings of previous address-style letters placed on the guard and subsequently removed. The endpin also has a small gasket around it.

The original Cherry Sunburst nitro lacquer finish is extremely vibrant and unfaded on the top, with bold Cherry-finished back, sides and neck. Exceedingly well-kept, there are a few spots of lacquer checking on top, with wear on the body limited to some very minor nicks and light scuffs in the clear coat of the lacquer, as well as light pick wear on the treble side of the soundhole. The neck profile is equally clean with its smooth nitro lacquer gloss and no palm wear.

A modern black tolex hardshell case is included.
