About This Listing

Up for sale, a 1966 Fender Precision Bass in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. This factory double custom color bass features a lightly greened Lake Placid Blue finish over Candy Apple Red with a white primer coat, stunningly well-kept for the past 55 years. Weighing 9lbs 3oz and strung with flatwound 50-110 strings, this P Bass has an authoritative and round sound. The tonewood combination of an alder body, maple neck, and Brazilian rosewood fingerboard yields a balanced, detailed tone with excellent treble detail and smooth thump with the Tone knob rolled back to taste. Professionally setup, we've had this bass dialed in here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar to ensure optimal action and intonation.

The one-piece maple neck has a modestly slender C carve with a very graceful, easy-playing feel and more roundness and shoulder in the higher registers. The fretboard edges are lightly rolled on the dark Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, and the profile measures .820" deep at the 1st fret and .990" at the 12th. The nitro lacquer gloss on neck profile is exceedingly smooth, with palm wear behind frets 2-7 and extending further up the treble side fretboard edge. Presumably strung with flatwounds for the majority of its life, the strings have been very kind to the original slender frets which have their full factory height and well-rounded crowns, showing only very light uniform wear on the crowns of frets 1-5, extending even more faintly beneath the A and D strings until fret 7. The bass features a straight neck, optimally adjusted truss rod, and truss rod nut flush with the neck heel, necessitating little adjustment over the past half century. The nut measures a full 1 3/4" in width. The headstock retains the original tuning machines with long stems and clover buttons, and the Precision Bass logo is fully intact and flawless. On the neck heel, the original February, 1966 date stamp is fully intact, and the factory paint stick markings are in the pocket show both the Lake Placid Blue finish and Candy Apple Red coat beneath it.

All of the electronics work as they should and the solder joints are untouched, with stock CTS pots which date to the 7th week of '66 and the original gray bobbin pickup with stock windings. One bobbin is pencil dated 3-28-66, and the other bobbin's base is obscured by the original foam that elevates the pickup. The body routes are clean and untouched, and all of the original hardware is present including the knurled metal knobs, finger rest, "ashtray" bridge and pickup covers, bridge with spiral saddles, and one of the very first "F" serial number neck plates. The chrome plating is stunningly clean, and the original three-ply pickguard is bright white and sits extremely flat, with a small repair to the guard at the input jack.

The original nitro lacquer Lake Placid Blue finish is stunningly clean and impeccably kept, and double custom color finishes are among the most collectable. There is faint horizontal lacquer checking and very light greening in the clear coat, while the bass still presents very “blue.” Cosmetic wear is limited to a few tiny finish chips on the body as a whole revealing the white primer coat and Candy Apple Red color coat beneath the Lake Placid Blue, as well as faint cable worming on the treble side body horn and a few additional minor dings on the body parameter. There are a few minor finish scratches and scuffs central to the lower bout and at the treble side waist, yet shy of what qualifies as “buckle rash."

The original black tolex hardshell case is included and equally as clean as the bass. The leather ends are in great shape, all three latches and the original handle are intact, and the case retains part of the small raised Fender badge on the exterior.
