About This Listing

RARE 1978 Fender Mustang MAPLE Neck
Mfd. 1978 in Fullerton, California

Yeh, I know - all sellers claim their items are SO rare. This is the truth, though - the maple neck was an option for the Fender Mustang only in the last couple years of its production, and very few were made. And what a shame, this is a GREAT neck - similar to an American Vintage Strat reissue!

In what was either a happy coincidence or a brilliant marketing move, the Fender Mustang debuted in the second half of 1964 at the same time as the wildly popular 1964 Ford Mustang. Production began at the Fender plant in August 1964, ending sometime after 1979.

  * One-piece Maple neck
 * "C" Shape profile
 *  22 medium frets
 * Accepts tuners that fit a 10mm tuner hole diameter
 * Nut width: 1+5/8" (40mm)
 * Neck width at neck end: a litle over 2+1/4" (55 mm)
 * Neck depth at 2nd fret: 21-22mm
 * Scale length: 24"

   Near-mint, which is outstanding for this neck's age. There is hardly any wear - if you look REALLY hard you can the beginning of some divots on the first 2 frets. This neck played like a nicely setup Strat before its removal, with low action and no issues. There is no wear to speak of to the fretboard or lacquer, and the headstock is refreshingly free of the usual dings along its edges. There is no wear at all to the original Fender logo. The original bushings are still mounted and included! The neck's original factory nut is still in fine condition, and its truss rod turns normally in both directions.There are some tiny dings in the lacquer on the back of the neck, too small to capture in a picture or to feel while you are playing it. Overall, this is a smooth playing and VERY handsome neck.
  In summary, if you have been looking for a great-playing Fender USA Mustang neck, but prefer a maple fretboard, here is your neck. Buy it before someone else does!

Installation Notes:
   This Mustang neck, with its 24" scale, is obviously intended for a Mustang body. It will fit a Stratocaster or Telecaster body as well, but it would take quite a bit of work to setup the intonation on a different scale body and I don't recommend it. Unlike most Mustangs, the neck's tuner hole diameter is 10mm (not 8.5mm). It originally came with the Fender/Schaller "F" logo tuners with metal pegs (not the usual white plastic pegs). These were the same tuners that fit the Sratocaster and Telecaster in the late 1970s and early 1980s. See my other listings for the tuners.
  Fender necks are easy to install - 4 screws and that's all - but be aware that it may take some expertise to adjust it for your guitar and bridge. If the action is too high (hard to play) or too low (the strings buzz) take it to a pro for a truss rod adjustment and intonation. If you don't know any good luthiers, ask around your local music shop - they'll know one.

The price includes:
The Fender Mustang neck itself with its original nut and bushings. The tuners and neck plate are for sale separately here.
