About This Listing

It is with great regret that we're listing this guitar for sale. It's been a shop favorite here for quite some time and is one of those guitars that we always reach for when demoing amplifiers, trying out new licks or just plain noodling. It's a 1950's Kay made Orpeum archtop, made in New York. She's in real clean condition considering the age. There is finish checking and crazing to the topcoat. There are the assorted small dings, chips and impressions that only 50-60 years of love and constant playing can deliver. There is some flattening and wear to the frets but plenty of material is remains for future leveling. The tuners have been changed to a Gotoh type and you can see the remaining Kluson type tuner holes that remain. There is some cracking on both sides of the neck heel which appears to be common on these guitars. Weight is 6.0 lbs 2 ozs.  The body and neck appear to be maple and the fingerboard is rosewood. The neck is a full, borderline fat "U" profile that feels warm, organic and inviting. Tonally, this one's a cannon! It's loud, percussive, booming and immediate. The tone is dry and warm. The Franz pickups are thick but have more clarity, note definition and bite than a typical P-90 pickup. This is the perfect guitar for swing, jump, blues or Jazz. It will be sorely missed.
