This German-made Klira Hollow body bass plays well and has a true full
hollow body sound with no sustain block in the middle. The tone is wide
open and warm, the neck is big, and it is a breeze to play! The orange
amber finish over the maple top back and sides draw you right in and
give this fine bass a worn-in vintage feel! The scale is 30” and it has
19 frets on a rosewood board with a fat D-profile shaped maple neck.
It has two Hofner style pick-ups that have a nice full sound. The open
and airy body is 16” wide by 1.75” deep. It is missing one knob and
the original brass bridge is screwed into the body with the ornate Klira
tailpiece. There is a crack on the body that runs from the top of the
lower F hole to nearby the neck pickup. There is also a finish crack
running down the back of the body as well. There’s a bit of wear along
the sides of the body as well as a few chips along the bottom of the
body. There are also a few splotches of what looks like white or beige
paint along the sides of the body. The end of the neck seems to have
been carved out for easier access to the end of the truss rod; there is
also evidence of similar alteration where the neck meets the body.
Despite this alternation there is no discernible effect on the
playability of the bass. It’s simply just another quirk of this unusual
and eye-catching bass. The great thing about this Klira is that the
two pick-ups are separated far apart, similar to the guitar. It offers
several distinct hollow body tones. There can’t be a whole lot of these
still floating around! Add another oddball to your collection now and
you’ll be pleasantly surprised by its finer traits! Does not include a
case.
