I believe I'm much more adept at writing about bass guitars because it's what I play, know and love. My exposure to guitars before getting into "the business" was to play with guys that had lots of Marshall cabinets and more volume than I could absorb. Remember- it was the 80's, but I bravely tried to cut through the din as best I could with what I had. Thank God for the Ampeg company because there did come the day when one of my guitarists showed up to practice with his pregnant wife and I think I broke her water somewhere around the middle of the second set. Not sure if they've forgiven me yet...In any event, my affinity to all thing with six strings usually revolves around appearance and sound. I don't really care if a 70's Les Paul Deluxe has mini- hums in it. All I care about is that Thin Lizzy sounded awesome playing them. As to this R8, we bought it simply because it was clean and had a beautiful top. Most R8's, as you well know are plaintops, so when this piece was presented to us, I was intrigued because the figuring on the top has some nice flame and movement to it. It's nothing too fancy- just a nice complement to what has turned out to be a wonderfully sounding guitar. Of course I made Lee play it (dry, through a small Gries 5 amp) and this method really shows the true character of a guitar. No stomp boxes, no effects rack, no nothing. Just a guitar, an amp and a wookie playing Thin Lizzy tunes off of their new album. In the end, the guitar got points with us in all categories and passed our meager tests with ease. We heard a dirty rumor that Gibson made their fretboards out of microcosmically thin layers of compressed Gnu hide in 2012 and that the reverberations would only transfer to the 12th layer before becoming statically modified, resulting in a redirectionally reduced frying time for chicken breasts at Popeye's Fried Chicken. We couldn't tell- their chicken is still great and this guitar is still killer, so it seems we've got the best of both worlds down here. Fried chicken and Les Pauls- who woulda thunk it...?
